Link Between Global Warming and Cold, Snowy, UK Winters

Scientists believe there could be a link between the melting Arctic ice and freezing weather in UK and Northern Europe, as wind and air patterns are altered.

2010 Hottest Year Globally

It is possible the position might change when the final figures for November and December have been factored in, although analysis has already shown that November temperatures for the world were running at "near record levels", the WMO said.

Releasing the figures at the UN Climate Conference in Cancun, Mexico, the WMO said the global combined sea surface and land surface air temperature for 2010 (January-October) "is currently estimated at 0.55C (0.99F) above the 1961-1990 annual average of 14C (57.2F)".

It added: "At present, 2010's nominal value is the highest on record, just ahead of 1998 (January-October anomaly 0.53C) and 2005 (0.52C)."

The WMO's official judgement is cautious, saying merely that "the year 2010 is almost certain to rank in the top three warmest years since the beginning of instrumental climate records in 1850."

However, even if this year's final position is not beyond doubt, it is already certain that the past decade is the hottest 10-year period in the instrumental record. "Over the 10 years from 2001 to 2010, global temperatures have averaged 0.46°C above the 1961-90 average, 0.03°C above the 2000-09 mean, and the highest value yet recorded for a 10-year period," the WMO said - The Independent.

2010 Officially Hottest Year On Record

Despite being one of the coldest winters in the UK for many years, 2010 has been half a degree Celsius warmer globally than the 30 year average, equal to 1998, which was the warmest year since records began. In 1998, El Nino actually made the world warmer, whereas 2010 has been influenced by La Nina, which should have had a cooling effect. The data is supported by The UK Met Office, The US National Weather Service and NASA.

Global Catastrophe Follows If Next Climate Summit Fails.

The next round of climate talks are due to take place in Cancun, after the failiure of the Copenhagen talks, as scientists predict the world will warm by a potentially dangerous 3.5 degrees by the end of the century, 1.5 degrees over the 'safe' limit.

"A month ago, in its annual State of the Climate report, published in conjunction with the UK Met Office's Hadley Centre, America's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) listed 10 separate indicators of a warming planet, seven of them rising – ranging from air temperature over land and humidity to sea level – and three of them declining: Arctic sea-ice, glaciers, and spring snow cover. "The scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable," NOAA said.

Massive Ice-sheet Breaks Free From Greenland

A massive ice sheet, 100 square miles in size has broken free from the Petermann glacier in Greenland, the largest glacier to break from the Arctic since 1962. It's unclear whether the event is linked to global warming, but the first six months of this year have been the hottest on record globally ... coincidence?... maybe.

Greenland Rises as Glaciers Melt

The continent of Greenland is rising by about 1 inch a year as the two mile thick sheet of ice that covers it melts, a worrying factor as the water from any melting ice will contribute to sea level rise.

Interest in Global Warming Wanes- World Still Warms

The public appear to be losing interest in global warming, or more to the point, that it could be caused by mankind. There is a greater than 50% chance however that 2010 will beat all records as it becomes hotter than 1998 or 2005, the warmest years on record so far.

February Arctic Sea Ice Increases, But Continues Down Trend

Arctic Sea ice for the month of February tracked below the 1979-2000 average, but there was 85,000 square miles more cover than the February 2005 record minimum. We won't know until the end of the Arctic summer melt season in or around September 2010 as to the extent of overall Arctic sea ice conditions, or indeed whether a new minimum level will be reached.

Greenland Ice-Melt Accelerates

Greenland's northwest coast is starting to melt, as Greenland glaciers accelerate into the ocean. Whilst no-one suspects Greenland's ice will melt altogether, if it did, sea levels would rise by some 21 feet.

Change in Sun's Output Won't Stop Global Warming

NASA study shows that even if when the sun is going through one of its solar minimum cycles ( every 11 years ) where solar output is reduced, it wont be enough to off-set global warming caused by increased levels of greenhouse gases.

Humans Must Be To Blame For Climate

Say scientists, who point out that no natural phenomena could be responsible for the warming that has taken place over the last half century.
The sun cannot be to blame, otherwise the warming that has occurred would have taken place in both the upper and lower atmospheres, instead of just the lower, as predicted by greenhouse gas computer models.
More water vapour in the atmosphere, caused by evaporation from warmer oceans is causing northern latitudes, including the UK to become wetter, as predicted.

Massive Ice-Berg Breaks Free From Antarctica

An ice berg the size of Luxembourg has broken free from the Antarctic continent, and is drifting free near Australia. The chunk of ice may have broken free as a result of global warming, but scientists are more concerned that its presence could interfere with the deep water current, which may effect the Gulf Stream, preventing warm water/air from reaching the UK.

UK Met Office To Re-check Climate Data

The Met Office will look again at 150 years of climate data to ensure that the predictions made by scientists are accurate, particularly the IPCC´s forcast that “warming of the climate system is unequivocal”.

Methane Level Greenhouse Gas Fears

Scientists are increasingly concerned about rising levels of methane gas, which is around 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as far as its global warming potential is concerned. The frozen Arctic, which holds massive amounts of methane could be a ticking time bomb, as the ice melts releasing tonnes of the gas into the atmosphere, causing further warming, and further melting of the ice and so on..

Quote Used To Discredit Climate Scientist is Fabricated

Sir John Houghton, eminent climate scientist and author of Global Warming: The Complete Briefing, is alleged to have "sexed up" scare stories on global warming by saying "Unless we announce disasters, no one will listen,"

He denies ever saying this, and according to another author and climate skeptic Christopher Booker, Houghton was supposed to have stated this in his own book, which was first published in 1994. The comment does not appear in Houghton's book however, or the later edition, and he denies ever saying it... Seems to be a case of climate skeptics jumping on false comments to support their own skeptical agenda.

UK Freezes: Australia Heats Up

Whilst the UK goes through a "normal" bad winter, the temperature on the other side of the world shows that the global temperature trend is UP. 2009 in Australia proves to be the second warmest since high-quality records began in 1910. Check out the graph by following the link above.

UK freezes, but Global Warming Continues

The current freeze being experienced by the UK is within normal temperature fluctuations and should not be confused with the fact that the underlying temperature trend is up! The last decade is the warmest on record and next this year is set to be the warmest since records began.
